PONDERAS HOSPITAL – Design Performance

Ponderas Academic Hospital is the most medically awarded private hospital in Bucharest, so our objective was to transform the main lobby and waiting area into a spatial and emotional experience, that will align with the brand intrinsic values.

The existing floor layout was re-designed 100% – so the space was open into an ample area, the reception desk, pacient care and sales offices relocated.

Our idea was to convert the typical hospital corridor into a serene, elegant and immersive environment, distinguished by material accuracy, smooth transitions, and ambient lighting. As the key brand values are professionalism and performance, our design mission was to create a space that will clearly communicate this,  but also not lacking calmness and easiness. We were very careful not to generate an “institutional” feeling.

The new layout is conceived as a continuous axis, with unique circular seating islands covered in cream eco-leather and mounted on brushed brass bases. These sculptural features not only soften the orthogonal geometry but also orchestrate movement, providing moments of stop and spatial rhythm. Overhead lighting, integrated into vast circular luminous rings, provides diffuse, glare-free illumination and thereby generates a sensation of spatial weightlessness.

Our main focus was to initiate a rhythm and repetition of key design elements, in order to convey structure, predictability and ultimately calm and elegance.

Material stratification is essential to the project’s spatial logic. Large-format ceramic cladding defines vertical planes, while SPC flooring ensures durability combined with domestic warmth underfoot. Meanwhile, curved glass partitions introduce soft transparency and layered depth, enabling filtered visual access to adjacent spaces without compromising privacy. In addition, brushed brass inserts frame doors and architectural joints, creating tactile thresholds that enhance wayfinding without introducing visual clutter.

The chromatic palette—composed of soft stone tones, ivory, and muted metallics—contributes to a sensorial calmness aligned with the project’s intent to express professionalism. Subtle graphic artwork, strategically placed, adds a layer of human presence to the otherwise abstracted spatial language.

Ultimately, the project challenges the conventional aesthetic of clinical environments, proposing instead a spatial experience rooted in structure, symmetry, rhythm and architectural serenity—where healing begins not only through medicine, but through light, form, and material.
